Ipoderac: Educative alternative for socially excluded children

Ipoderac

IPODERAC is a Civil Association located 25 km away from the Carretera Federal between Puebla and Atlixco, a small city on the outskirts of the volcano, Popocatépetl, with a population of 80,000. Ipoderac was established on the 27th June 1966 as a Civil Association as a response to unstructured youth. Thus, formed as a home, Ipoderac dealt with “Insuring the integral development of children and youths on the streets and abandoned”.

History

The history of Ipoderac began in the early 1960’s when a group of people decided to concentrate their efforts on what was needed most by society. This group began their work by visiting inmates in the San Juan de Dios prison in the city of Puebla. As time passed, the group discovered that the once they had left prison, the prisoners not only did not improve their fates, but also relapsed into criminal activity.

The initial group  was increased and decided to help vulnerable children and youths, like those that they had encountered in the prison. They decided to found an institution whose construction could make plans from the foundations, thinking of the functions and needs of the boys that they proposed to receive and raise, and dedicated entirely to them.

On 15th August 1968, The construction of the first house in Ipoderac was started. There are now 6 houses, each with the capacity for 12 boys, an educator, and a volunteer. There are also stables to house a herd of goats, a cheesery as a part of the project of development in work, a soap production workshop, a computer lab, a carpentry workshop, and a communal kitchen.
